Attendees raised the following main points:
- With the rise in the number of people with dementia, palliative care needs to take into account that support may need to be provided for a longer period of time than normal. There is also a need to make sure that palliative care teams understand the needs of patients with dementia and are equipped with the skills and knowledge to deal with all symptoms including behaviour problems.
- The importance of advanced care planning was emphasised - which need to take place when the patient is still able to express their wishes. Systems need to be in place to ensure their wishes are taken into account.
