Engagement courses

Our health equity engagement courses and resources are designed to focus-on open conversations with communities and groups who are experiencing inequalities, giving us qualitative data to enhance our knowledge about the problems local people face and what causes them.

The courses and resources below will help build engagement approaches into your project work and champion the need for engagement with colleagues and partners.

These courses are suitable for all staff. People who attend these courses and use these resources will develop:

  • Confidence to build engagement approaches into your project work and champion the need for engagement with colleagues and partners
  • A foundation-level understanding of:
    • what engagement is and how it can help to reduce inequalities
    • how to engage with communities to develop co-production plans
    • how community engagement can enable your work

Provider - Social Care Insititute for Excellence (SCIE)

Cost - Free

Description - 10 self-directed e-learning modules covering the principles of good communication skills and how to apply these to practice. 

Who this is for - All existing and new starter ICS colleagues who would like to develop communication skills and knowledge. Primary aimed at Social Care staff, however content transferable across health and care sectors.

Provider - North West London Learning and Development Programme

Cost - Free

Description - This learning path looks at how you can become more confident and effective in your workplace communication. There is advice on how to express yourself, body language, communicating when under pressure and much more. 

Who this is for - All existing and new starter ICS colleagues - includes ICB, borough, PCN and VCS staff.

Provider - NHS England Future Learn

Cost - £174.99 for an unlimited subscription

Duration - This is a two week course that requires three hours of study time each week. 

Description -  Learn how to engage with different people and communities to reduce inequalities and ensure inclusive access to healthcare. By the end of this course, you’ll have the practical tools and knowledge to understand how to successfully involve people and communities in your work.

Who this is for - All existing and new starter ICS colleagues - includes ICB, borough, PCN and VCS staff who work and engage closely with communities in North West London.

Provider - National Academy of Community Organising

Cost - First module free, then £24 per module, or all eight modules for £153.60 (20% discount). 

Description - Consists of self-directed nine modules in the Framework Focus series, starting with Reach (which is a free course). The other eight  modules are available for purchase individually or as part of a bundle with 20% discount. Together, these 70 videos amount to seven hours of self-directed learning that you can watch and reflect on at your own pace, either on your own or with your team.

Who this is for - All existing and new starter ICS colleagues who are involved with organising community events/engagement.

Description - A number of London-based and national case studies and evaluations on engagement approaches and how this has impacted on service delivery. 

Who this is for - All existing and new starter ICS colleagues who want to develop their understanding of approaches to engaging and working with communities and enable effective and sustainable collaboration.

Description - A range of learning a support matierals provided by NHSE and Future NHS, including links to statutory guidance on working in partnership with people and communities and suggested  FutureNHS networks.

Description - A podcast presented by Olivia Butterworth (Deputy Director for People and Communities at NHS England) on how integrated care boards (ICBs) can work in partnership with people and communities.

Description - These sessions are about working in partnership with people and communities and include a mix of webinars and workshops, hosted by the Public Participation team.
