North West London Health Equity Programme Academy

Welcome to the Population Health Management and Health Equity Academy, which has been designed to support staff members from across the Integrated Care System to develop skills, knowledge and confidence in efficient and effective approaches to Population Health Management (PHM).

Below you will find five skills domains relating to PHM:

  • Analytics
  • Engagement
  • Leadership and Facilitation
  • Co-production
  • Health Economics and Value-based Care

Under each of these there is a link that will take you to a spreadsheet that lists a range of training and development courses including self-directed modules and resources available from external partners, as well as related training available via the NW London Learning and Development service.

In addition to the 5 domains listed above there is a link to a page of wider aligned training that may be of interest to those building skills in PHM.  Please click on the link under this heading to see the training opportunities listed here.

Whilst the learning resources have been attributed to and listed under specific PHM domains we recognise that many will be cross-cutting and support development of PHM skills and knowledge in a wider way. We would encourage you to look across all tabs to make sure you access all relevant training and development opportunities offered here.

Unless otherwise stated all resources are free to access.

We will be regularly updating content as courses become available so please do check in regularly to see what’s new.

We hope to start mailing out information on new and upcoming training in the near future. If you would like to receive regular updates please do email matthew.harmer@nhs.net and we will add you to our mailing list. We hope to start providing email updates in early May.

We would also welcome your feedback on both the current offer available, as well as any suggestions for future development relating to PHM. If you have any feedback please do email matthew.harmer@nhs.net

Who is the training for?

There is a range of training and development opportunities listed to suit all levels of need from those with little or no experience in population health management (PHM) to those who are looking for more tailored, specialist skills development.

The training available in the Academy is open to anyone who is interested in developing skills in PHM and feels that the particular course they are looking at would help them in their day-to-day role to deliver more effective interventions.

The majority of the training is suitable for those who do not need specialist skills or knowledge, however for the small number of training opportunities aimed at those who do require specialist skills these are identified as such with the following prefix: (Specialist).

If you are unsure whether a particular training course is right for you, we would encourage you to speak with your line manager to help identify suitable courses.

Using PHM skills to delivery change – the FOCUS ON methodology

We have developed the Focus On methodology to help describe a clear and consistent approach to delivering effective PHM.

Each of the 5 domains have been assigned a Focus-On stage and can be seen at the top of each training spreadsheet when you click on the link.

Please do think about the Focus On methodology and which of the 6 stages you need to develop skills in – this will help you identify which of the 5 domains to look at for training and development courses (e.g. if you are interested in stage 1 (FIND) you may want to look under Analytics for training and development courses).

Analytical courses

These courses are designed to help develop knowledge, skills and confidence in analytical functions and insights, and data literacy more generally.

The training offered here is for both analysts and non-analysts alike and ranges from basic Excel training to advanced SQL and Python. Those courses that do not have an (Specialist) prefix are primarily for non-analysts and are designed to help you use, understand and interpret data more effectively in day-to-day work, and work more effectively with colleagues from our BI/Analytics staff groups.

Engagement courses

These courses are designed to help develop knowledge, skills and confidence in having open conversations with our local communities and citizen groups. Course content includes explaining what engagement is, how it links but is different to co-design/production, developing skills in delivering meaningful engagement approaches, and how to build this into your project work. We strongly recommend that you also look at courses listed under Co-production to understand how the two areas are linked

The training offer includes best practice examples of how to lead and facilitate meaningful conversations and helps you build skills in active listening and communication. Where training in other domains focuses on more specific skills, this domain offers more overarching training to support to help you deliver the Focus-on model end-to-end.
